YTL Arena Bristol public consultation

The team behind the plans to create an arena for Bristol are throwing open the doors of the Brabazon hangars to the general public.

They will be holding three drop-in sessions at the Site Operations Centre at the former Filton Airfield, for people to find out more about their plans to repurpose the iconic hangars in Filton as part of a public consultation programme. There will also be an opportunity to visit the hangars which are the birthplace of Concorde.

The three sessions at the Site Operations Centre, Filton Airfield, are on:

  • Thursday 18 July from 4pm to 8pm, with the last tour of the hangars at 7pm
  • Friday 19 July from 10am to 4pm, with last tour of the hangars at 3pm
  • Saturday 10am to 4pm, with last tour of the hangars at 3pm.

Staff will be on hand to tell people about the plans and answer questions.

The arena team is also planning a number of roadshows around Bristol and South Gloucestershire. The first of these are:

  • Wednesday 10 July at Yate Shopping Centre, North Walk, Bristol BS37 4AP
  • Thursday 11 July at Kings Chase Shopping Centre, Regent Street, Kingswood BS15 8LP
  • Thursday 25 July at Southmead Greenway Centre, Doncaster Road, Bristol BS10 5PY
  • Friday 26 July, St Nicholas’ Market, Corn Street, Bristol BS1 1JQ

YTL Arena Operations Managing Director Andrew Billingham said:  ‘We are really keen to share our plans with as many people as possible from the greater Bristol region. YTL Arena aspires to be a world class entertainment destination for Bristol people to be proud of. To achieve this, we want local people’s feedback as they matter to us and will help inform our proposals.’

Visitors are advised to wear comfy shoes and to get in touch in advance if they have any access requirements.

Who are YTL?

Founded in 1955, the family-run Malaysian company is a long-term investor. It is a highly successful international conglomerate with interests in power generation, water, rail, cement, construction, communications, property development, hotels and spas. It has UK assets of more than £3 billion, including Wessex Water, The Gainsborough Bath Spa hotel and Thermae Bath Spa in Bath, and hotels in London and Edinburgh.

YTL Arena

Our vision is to put Bristol on the world stage for live music and entertainment by creating a visionary venue with people at the heart, and attracting global events.

We plan to repurpose the historic Brabazon hangars – the birthplace of Concorde and the home of supersonic. One arena, three spaces, the hangars will house a new and unique centre for entertainment: the Central hangar: housing the ‘main stage’ where people assemble to enjoy world class performances and events; the East hangar: a flexible, open space, creating a ‘Festival Hall’ for exhibitions, trade shows, or as a warm-up area, or additional break-out space to compliment and support the activities in the Central hangar; the West hangar: ‘The Hub’, the heartbeat of the development and home to local businesses and organisations. It will offer a vibrant mix of restaurants, bars, family and leisure activities and work spaces to create an exciting and lively 365 day a year venue.

With new public transport infrastructure programmed to open in 2021, the proposed new arena will be within a stone’s throw of the city centre. It will source local products and services, create 500 new jobs, and inject in excess of £700 million into the local economy over the next 25 years.

Brabazon Bristol – the former Filton Airfield

The proposed YTL Arena sits on the edge of the former Filton Airfield, which is also being transformed by YTL Developments. This historic local landmark is set to become Brabazon, a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol. The 380 acres of the Airfield will become a new urban community, with more than 2,600 homes, creative workplaces and a vibrant town centre set among landscaped public squares and parkland. At the same time, more than £100 million is being invested to improve local infrastructure: a new railway station will connect to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes and a dedicated metrobus will run straight to the city centre.
