Black History Month is an annual celebration of the history, achievements and contributions of Black people in the UK.
The aims of Black History Month are to:
- promote knowledge and understanding of Black History and culture, both nationally and in Bristol
- acknowledge and celebrate the contributions made by Black people to the cultural and economic development of the UK

The Bristol Black History Month Magazine
From: 1 October 2020
The Bristol Black History Month organisers released their annual magazine on 1 October, which you can read online for free here. The magazine is “a space to co-design and co-create material that is innovative, representative and appealing to the African and Caribbean communities of different ages in the West of England.”
Bristol, #BlackLivesMatter & the Media Storm
From: 6 October 2020
The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) will be streaming an online talk, hosted by Avril Lee, chair of the CIPR Diversity and Inclusion committee, with Sima Kotecha, a television and radio correspondent for BBC national news, and Saskia Konynenburg, the Head of External Comms for Bristol City Council.
This will be an opportunity to hear from two people about their experiences of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the comms story behind the toppling of Edward Colston’s statue.

The University of Bristol Students’ Union Black History Month
From: 10 to 30 October 2020
The University of Bristol Students’ Union has revealed the full line up of events taking place for Black History Month this October.
Speakers will include Bristol alumni such as Chanté Joseph, founder of the Bristol BME Powerlist, and Liv Little, founder of gal-dem, plus many more.

Hosted by NatWest Entrepreneurship Accelerator, the event gives audiences the opportunity to hear first-hand experiences from high profile founders and entrepreneurs with a relatable, authentic story to tell.

Black History Month at Bristol Museums
From: 8 - 15 October 2020
Bristol Museums will be hosting a series of online events throughout October, all free to watch via Zoom, but donations are encouraged. Topics range from the St Pauls riots, colonialism and Covid, and the Black Lives Matter Protests.

Royal College of Nursing Black History Month Virtual Celebration
From: 22 October 2020
University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and RCN Greater Bristol Branch annual Black History Month celebration will take place this year over WebEx. The event will feature Jeff Farrar, Trust Chair, Lucy Muchina, RCN Regional Director and Vernon Samuels, Olympic British athlete.
Black History Month 2020 at St Pauls’ Learning Centre
From: October - December 2020
The Real Photography Company will be hosting an exhibition of portraits by Bristol-based artist and photographer Garfield McKenzie. The exhibition aims to “make visible a generation of intrepid individuals, who left their homeland to make the journey to a new life. These elders paved the way for the generations of black British communities living in the UK today.”
The exhibition will be held at Glen’s Café at the St Paul’s Learning Centre until December 2020.
